Kogi State Commissioner for Education Hon. Wemi Jones advised the National Association of Proprietors of Private schools Kogi State Chapter to prioritize service and value creation above profit making in schools administration.
He stated this when he met the State Executive of NAPPS led by the State Chairman Pastor Reuben Jimoh in his office in Lokoja.
The Commissioner said Education is a social service and not a profit making venture, saying that the sector is basically to create values and render services to the society.
He assured that the State Government will collaboration with them in order to sustain the steady progress that has been made in Education.
The State Government he said is mindful of their contribution to the development of education, noting that everything will be done to help in sustaining their business.
He stated that the State has no capacity to accommodate all the students of school going age in public schools, hence then need to collaborate with them to reduce the number of out of school children in the state.
He called on them to cooperate with the Ministry to ensure that the ongoing data capturing of schools in the state is successful, explaining that for better planning and good implementation of Government policies, there is need for Government to have near accurate figures of the number of schools and Students in the State.
This he said hindered the State Government from extending Government free payment of both Internal and External Examinations Fees to students in private schools as the was no accurate data of all private schools and their students in the Ministry.
In his remarks, the State Chairman of the National Association of Proprietors of Private schools (NAPPS) Pastor Reuben Jimoh congratulated the Commissioner on his reappointment as the state Commissioner for Education and enjoined him to build on the good work he started.
He called on the State Government to include the Private schools in the free payment of Examination fees policy, saying that the students in private schools should equally benefit from the gesture as they are also indigenes of the State.
The Chairman equally appealed to the State Government to reduce the taxes being paid by private schools, adding that many of the schools are finding it difficult to cope with the taxes.
