Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board,(SUBEB) Engr. Abdulrazak Mohammed Yusuf has said the State will leverage on the benefits of School Sports to harness and train budding talents for the all-round development of children in the state.
Engr. Yusuf made this assertion at the grand finale of the Basic Education Schools Sports Competitions for Primary School pupils held at the Holy Trinity School, Lokoja.
The Chairman who was represented by the SUBEB Secretary, Salisu Adakeke said catching them young at a tender age will inspire and improve their productivity thereby making them stand out and excel in both sports and academics.
Speaking further, he urged schools in the state to shun the habit of poaching athletes who are ineligible for competitions outside the school environment, rather accord opportunities to school pupils in public Primary schools in accordance with the criteria of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
He explained that organizing Primary Schools Sports competitions was a talent hunt for younger Ones to enable them showcase their talents in sports activities.
In his Remarks, Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, who was represented by the Coordinator of UBEC, Kogi State, Mr Alabi Ajayi used the occasion to call on the state government to continue to encourage young talented lovers of sports.
He said primary school pupils who are into sports should be given necessary support and assistance to enable them excel in their chosen careers.
He described Sports as a major factor that brings people of different ethnic background together.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Director School Services, Mrs Victoria Daniel said the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) will continue to encourage team spirit of sportsmanship to make beginners self reliance as it has the benefit of rewarding champions.
She commended the State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo for his unwavering support to sports activities in the state.
The participants drawn from the three senatorial districts across the state witnessed the presentation of medals and trophies to the pupils.
