The Kogi State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) for the implementation of the Formal Sector Health Insurance Plan for Local Government civil servants.
Speaking during the signing ceremony held in her office in Lokoja Monday, the Secretary to the Government of Kogi State (SGS), Mrs. Folashade Arike Ayoade, Ph.D, described the agreement as a milestone towards ensuring affordable healthcare for local government employees.
Mrs. Ayoade expressed confidence in the success of the initiative, citing the outstanding performance of the Kogi State Health Insurance Agency (KGSHIA) at the state level. She commended former Governor Yahaya Bello, CON, for laying the foundation by establishing the scheme and praised Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for sustaining and expanding the initiative.
She encouraged local government workers to enrol themselves and four eligible family members, highlighting the scheme’s numerous health benefits. “Health is wealth,” she noted while congratulating KGSHIA for its achievements and urging it to replicate its success at the local level.
In his welcome remarks, the Executive Secretary of KGSHIA, Dr. Adekunle Aledare revealed that 63,000 state civil servants have already been enrolled under the scheme, with an additional 33,000 local government workers now registered.
Dr. Aledare emphasized the government’s vision to achieve Universal Health Coverage in the state by 2030. He commended Governor Ododo for creating an enabling environment and prioritizing accessible and efficient healthcare for all categories of workers.
In their goodwill messages, the Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Hon. Adams Adabenege—represented by Hon. Elisha Peter Folorunsho—and the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Gabriel Amari, lauded the government's decision to extend the scheme to the grassroots.
They also expressed confidence in KGSHIA’s ability to deliver quality and affordable healthcare services to civil servants across the 21 Local Government Areas of of the state.
