The Kogi State Government has reconstituted a 26-member Drug Control Committee in line with the National Drug Control Master Plan (NDCMP) 2015–2019, to tackle the growing menace of drug abuse across the state.
Launching the committee in Lokoja on Thursday, the Secretary to the Government of Kogi State, Mrs. Folashade Arike Ayoade, Ph.D., said the move had become expedient due to the alarming rise in illicit drug use and trafficking.
"We all know the effects of hard drugs and the menace they cause in our society. The purpose of this committee is to drastically reduce the sale, distribution, and consumption of hard drugs in the
State,” she said.
Mrs. Ayoade stressed that Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s administration is determined to ensure the state does not become a safe haven for drug dealers. She added that if the committee works hard and achieves its objectives, Kogi will experience a safer and more saner society with reduced crime rates.
The State Drug Control Committee (SDCC) draws membership from a broad range of institutions and groups, including:
National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)
Ministries of Health, Education, Information & Communications, Youth & Sports Development, Women Affairs, Local Government & Chieftaincy Affairs, Humanitarian Affairs
Traditional Rulers and Local Government Chairmen; Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria and Pharmacy Council of Nigeria
Others are:
Faith-based bodies (CAN, JNI), NGOs/CSOs, and youth associations.
Responding on behalf of the SDCC, Umar Mustapha Yahuza, NDLEA Kogi Commander and co-chair of the committee alongside Hajia Sefinat Usman Ododo, Wife of the Governor, assured the state that the committee will work tirelessly to achieve its goals.
He thanked Governor Ododo for bringing the committee to life, describing it as a timely intervention in safeguarding the health and security of Kogi people.
