World Press Freedom Day: Kogi NUJ Calls for Increased Investment in Media, Improved Welfare for journalists

The Kogi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on government at all levels to increase investment in media organisations and improve the welfare of journalists to enhance productivity and strengthen press freedom.

In a statement to mark the 2026 World Press Freedom Day, the State Chairman of NUJ, Alhaji Ademu Seidu Haruna, said adequate funding and improved working conditions are essential for a vibrant and independent media.

The statement, signed by the Council Secretary, Dr. Atuluku Samuel, noted that media organisations are currently facing numerous challenges, stressing the need for media owners, governments, and other stakeholders to provide modern technological tools to meet the evolving demands of the profession.

Alhaji Ademu specifically appealed to the Kogi State Government to upgrade facilities in its media establishments, including Radio Kogi and the Graphic Newspaper, increase funding for the State Ministry of Information, and consider the establishment of a state-owned television station.

He emphasized that press freedom entails granting journalists access to information and enabling them to perform their duties without fear of harassment, intimidation, or threats to their safety.

While commending Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for maintaining a cordial relationship with the media, the NUJ Chairman called for stronger collaboration and a more enabling environment for journalists to operate effectively.

“Press freedom in Kogi State under Governor Ododo has been commendable, with a cordial relationship between the government and the media. However, there is a need for improved support for the NUJ, including intervention in its infrastructure, as the existing facilities are in a state of disrepair,” he said.

Alhaji Ademu further noted that this year’s World Press Freedom Day highlights the importance of protecting human rights and ensuring the safety of lives and property.

He assured that the Council would continue to collaborate with relevant authorities, particularly security agencies, to ensure the safety and protection of journalists across the state.
