2027 ELECTION: MY FACEBOOK SURVEY AND RESPONSE ON VOTERS APATHY
I made a Facebook post on the theme: 10 Reasons why you must vote in 2027. The responses I got revealed that
Many Nigerians are angry, some are discouraged and many are also afraid. I got comments such as
: “What is the point of voting when thugs carry guns on election day?” Others say: “Results are already written before the election begins.” Some even believe: “No matter what happens at the polls, shortchanged politicians will simply be told to "Go to court.’”
These fears are real. These concerns are valid. And former President Goodluck Jonathan recently raised a similar concern — that democracy is endangered when courtrooms begin to replace the ballot box as the true decider of elections.
But here is the critical question:
Should Nigerians surrender democracy because of these problems? Or should Nigerians rise and fight peacefully to protect it?
If good people refuse to vote because they are frustrated, fearful, or hopeless, then the corrupt and desperate forces become stronger. Voter apathy is exactly what manipulators want. When citizens stay away from the polls, a small minority gains the power to decide the future of millions.
Democracy survives only when citizens refuse to give up.
Yes, there are challenges: Electoral violence , Intimidation by political thugs , allegations of result manipulation , abuse of state power and judicial controversies
but the solution is not silence. The solution is not withdrawal. The solution is not hopelessness.
The solution is greater citizen participation, vigilance, unity, and peaceful resistance against electoral injustice.
History shows that no corrupt system survives forever when citizens become fully awake and determined. Every positive change in society began when ordinary people refused to surrender their future.
Ahead of 2027, Nigerians — especially the youths — must understand these truths:
Your vote is still your constitutional power.
Refusing to vote weakens the voice of the people.
Massive turnout makes manipulation more difficult.
Democracy dies when citizens become indifferent.
The future cannot be changed by spectators.
Electoral reforms become possible only when citizens stay engaged.
Nigeria belongs to all Nigerians — not a few political actors.
Fear must not defeat civic responsibility.
Peaceful participation is stronger than political intimidation.
Hope is a duty if we truly desire a better Nigeria.
Nigeria can still work. But it will only work when citizens refuse to surrender their voice.
YOUR VOTE IS YOUR VOICE.
