In its effort to foster gender equality in education, the Adolescent Girls Initiative and Learning Empowerment (Agile ) project has begun a five days workshop Program for the domestication of National Gender Policy in Education and it implementation Guidelines in the State.
The workshop which started on Tuesday 18th will end 22n March, 2025, with participants drawn from the academia and Senior Directors from relevant Ministries and Agencies.
Declaring the workshop open in Lokoja, the State Commissioner for Education Hon. Wemi Jones said the step was to create an inclusive and equitable learning environment and to ensure Gender Equality in Education.
According to him, the Policy would bridge the gender gap in education, fostering a culture of equality and opportunity for All.
He called on the participants to bring to bear their wealth of experiences and bring out a credible and worthwhile policy guidelines for implementation.
The Commissioner who was represented by the Permanent Secretary Dr Jibrin Saidu Alhaji urged the participants to carryout the exercise with all vigor and come up with a document that would benefit the State.
In his words, " I urged you to bring to bear your your wealth of experiences, God's willing, at the end of the day, the State will be better for it, the Children will be better for it and the Education sector will be better for it"
He stated that as good ambassadors of their various organizations they should see the assignment as a call to service.
In his address, the Agile project coordinator in Kogi State, Dr. Bello Abdulhakem said the project has been instrumental in improving Girl's access to Education, reducing barriers to learning and empowering young women with life skills.
He commended the State Government for it's commitment to gender responsive education reform.
Also speaking, the State Coordinator for drafting of Gender in Education Policy who is also the Director Educational Planning Research and Statistics Ministry of Education Dr. Elizabeth Animoku Ahman said the Policy aligns with Sustainable Development Goals 5 which aims to eliminate discrimination and violence against women and girls while ensuring equal rights and opportunities.
She noted that Gender in Education Policy would eliminate gender disparities, promoting gender equality and addressing gender stereotypes that limit the potential of both girls and boys.
